The monasteries and temples of Ajanta and Ellora

Separated by a goodly 100km, the Buddhist caves of Ajanta and the Jain, Hindu and Buddhist rock-cut architecture of Ellora are still spoken of inseparably. ASI describes the painting and sculptures of Ajanta as the finest surviving examples of Indian art (ascribed to two distinct periods, the earliest caves date back to 100 BCE). Ellora’s ‘uninterrupted sequence of monuments’ came up between CE 600 and CE 1000, rising impossibly from the basalt cliffs of the Western Ghats near Aurangabad. The Kailasanatha Temple is its unsurpassed centrepiece. maharashtratourism.gov.in
